Essential Tips for Diabetic Footcare During Summer

Most chronic illnesses require lifestyle changes according to the seasons, and diabetes is no exception. There’s a lot to juggle when you have diabetes, from diet to exercise regimen and footwear. As it turns out, each season requires care to keep your feet healthy. Take a look at our essential tips for diabetic foot care during summer.

Don’t Walk Barefoot

It might be tempting to walk barefoot, especially somewhere like the beach, where you can’t exactly wear flip-flops into the ocean or in the pool. However, going barefoot isn’t a good idea. First, summer temperatures can be dangerously hot. When you have diabetes, your feet are more sensitive to burns, so it isn’t wise to step on hot tile, concrete, or sand. Instead, wear diabetic footwear and enjoy the sun safely.

Inspect Your Feet Daily

You must always inspect your feet, but you should pay special attention during the summer since sunburn is more likely. The tops of your feet are especially vulnerable if you wear flip-flops—which we don’t recommend. Inspecting your feet daily ensures that you’ll catch a problem before it becomes serious, like a corn or blister. Inspect your feet every night before you go to sleep.

Get the Right Footwear

Wearing the right footwear inside and outside the house is important for comfort and safety. Get a pair of women’s or men’s orthopedic slippers to wear indoors. This way, you can protect your feet inside and outside all summer and throughout the rest of the year.

Don’t Forget To Moisturize

The summer heat can cause tough, cracked skin. This can lead to infection as bacteria can get into the cracks from the open air. This is the last thing that you want if you have diabetes. Cuts and cracks in your feet can get infected and, worse, can cause things like gangrene, which can lead to amputation. Moisturize your feet regularly, especially when you notice dryness. This is an essential tip for diabetic foot care during summer.

Take Your Supplies With You Wherever You Go

So, you’re going outside to get a fresh tan. Excellent! You need to make sure you’re well-equipped for the trip. The rising heat can have a serious impact on blood sugar. Ensure you take your lancelets, insulin, and glucose machines with you for the trip. You’ll be happy you came prepared if your blood sugar rises or tanks.
