What is Prediabetes?

Prediabetes

Prediabetes is a condition in which your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. If you have prediabetes, you are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

What Causes Prediabetes?

The exact cause of prediabetes is unknown. However, it is thought to be caused by a combination of factors, including:

  • Obesity
  • Family history of diabetes
  • Age
  • Race or ethnicity
  • Physical inactivity
  • Certain medications

 

How Is Prediabetes Diagnosed?

Prediabetes can be diagnosed with a blood test. The most common blood test for prediabetes is the fasting plasma glucose (FPG) test. The FPG test measures your blood sugar level after you have fasted for 8 hours.

If your FPG level is between 100 and 125 mg/dL, you have prediabetes. If your FPG level is 126 mg/dL or higher, you have diabetes.

 

How Is Prediabetes Treated?

There is no cure for prediabetes. However, it can be treated and managed. The goal of treatment for prediabetes is to lower your blood sugar levels to normal levels.

There are a number of ways to treat prediabetes. These include:

  • Losing weight
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Exercising regularly
  • Taking medication

 

What Are the Complications of Prediabetes?

If you have prediabetes, you are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is a serious chronic disease that can lead to a number of health problems, including heart disease, stroke, blindness, and kidney disease.

 

How Can You Prevent Prediabetes?

There are a number of things you can do to lower your risk of developing prediabetes. These include:

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Exercising regularly
  • Avoiding smoking
  • Limiting alcohol intake
